You're a busy person. We get it. You just don't have time to roam the entirety of Louisville, Kentucky on your trip because you've got a lecture on gold bullion bars to deliver, a trading conference to attend, and several doddering old relatives to visit. When you get a minute free, you need to be able to make a beeline straight for the attraction, restaurant, or theater you're interested in or you won't have time to properly take it all in. That's why we created this article - to share with you our "best" of Louisville and free up your valuable time.
Best Sporting Event
Though held only once a year, the Kentucky Derby is the defining feature of the Louisville sporting scene. Held on the first Saturday of May, this horse race is preceded by two weeks of balloon races, fireworks, and other events.
Best Park
Jefferson Memorial Forest is the largest urban forest in the country and a great place to go to escape the sounds of slurry mixers and traffic. There are 30 miles of trail, views of downtown, camping, fishing, and a wildlife preserve.
Best Performing Arts
Louisville orchestra has been around since 1937 and it continues to draw in crowds because of its mastery of music. With more than 125 performances per year, you're more than likely to be able to catch a show no matter when you're in town.
Best Historical Connection
Old Louisville. This historic preservation district doesn't prohibit newfangled devices like iPhone pouches but it does make you feel like you've walked into the past as its architecture is almost exclusively 19th century.
Best Restaurant
Jack Fry's. This much-loved restaurant is neither too fancy nor too greasy. It's got menu options from both camps, a comfy atmosphere, and of course, delicious food. It's been in operation since 1930.
Best Festival
Abbey Road on the River. Though there are many great events on the Louisville calendar, this Beatles music festival is the largest in the world. Held for five days on Memorial Day weekend, it features tribute bands of all sizes and ages, from retirees to little ones in diapers.
Best Museum
The Frazier International History Museum. The south is perhaps best known for its obsession with history, particularly the American Civil War. This museum holds 1,000 years of military artifacts along with two re-enactment theaters so you don't have to time your visit to coincide with an outdoor reenactment.
Best Tour
Belle of Louisville. This restored Mississippi steamboat is the oldest in operation. Its river cruises are a great way to get a tour of the city without leaving your seat. You can even host your entire Kitchener Counselling Retreat on board if you book in advance.
